Mixing patterns can be tricky but when done right can add so much dimension, movement and beauty to your home. This can be done by textiles, or solids (wall treatments, floor designs, etc). Let me explain my tips and tricks when mixing patterns.
Tip No.1
If you are mixing patterns in your home with textiles I always say, start with a cohesive color scheme. Patterns can be busy and we don’t want to feel too overwhelmed while looking at them. So say you love a floral curtain for your daughters room…pull your favorite colors out of that floral pattern and go from there.
Tip No.2
Once you have your first pattern you love + picked the colors you like from it, choose your next pattern. With florals or ornate designs a good rule of thumb is to choose a geometric pattern to complement it. These can be stripes, plaids, or anything that repeats itself. Adding shiplap to a wall next to floral wallpaper can play off each other very beautifully.
Tip No.3
Don’t make the patterns compete. If you have a full shiplapped wall, go with a small print floral bedding, or an intricate oriental rug. You don’t want two large scale patterns next to each other, let them play off each other in a tasteful way. This will ease the eye and make you really see the detail of them rather than having all that pattern slap you in the face the second you step into a room.
